So you and your partner have very different ideas about how to decorate your home? When tastes collide, decor for home harmony will need compromise! Here are some suggestions from the experts on blending both preferences to create harmony and beauty that will please you both.

Opposites attract, right?

Maybe not so much in home décor where lack of cohesion can just look messy and discordant. To start with, focus on what you both like.  Is there a base colour that you can work with?  Neutral shades are often a good place to start.  Do you both like wooden floors?  Tiling? Or good quality carpets?  One you’ve got the bases agreed, it makes it easier to build the look you both like

Find that common element

Jennifer Verruto, Founder and CEO of Blythe Interiors suggests that if finding ‘a common design element is too hard, look for things in life you both love. Do you both love the beach and want a beachy vibe? Is there a favorite first date restaurant you both felt was fabulous? Often focusing on the feeling of a space can help couples merge their design styles.’ (source: homesandgardens.com)

Merging ultra modern with more traditional styles

Is this even possible? Yes!  Consider a stylish velvet or leather sofa with a montage of vintage framed mirrors or photos on a wall.  Modern patterned carpets layered with rugs in softer shades and textures.  Or vice versa – block colour carpets can be layered with smaller patterned carpets to contrast and complement.  Throws and cushions with interesting fabrics and textures can blend beautifully with a more modern style to give a very comfortable, eclectic vibe without feeling dislocated.

Everyone needs their own space!

Why not find somewhere that you can each make uniquely yours? Your study, snug, gaming space, reading corner, bathroom  …. Work out what works for both of you – brainstorming and compromise may be needed.

Remember that there really are no absolute rights and wrongs – what you decide will reflect your characters, what you love about each other, and your home. And accessories can easily be switched according to seasons and moods.

Have fun!
