Décor trends for Christmas 2023 are as varied as they always have been.  From the random, fling-everything-on-and-up that families with kids have (I remember it well), to the ultra styled, to the weird and wonderful.  Colours trending are the rich jewel tones of deep reds, blues, greens and gold.

I’ll share with you my favourites.

So, whether or not your decorations are up, read on and let me know what you think.

This year woodland vibes are hugely popular. Earthy tones, in addition to the more natural, pared down, brown and green palettes. Expect to see warm rich rust, terracotta, and copper decorations.

An abundance of natural, fragrant foliage is everywhere. In addition to foraged greenery, folk are loving plenty of pampas grass, other dried grasses, flowers, fruits, and spices.

When you’re making your wreath, think about adding some sprigs of rosemary – wonderful scent, plus it means remembrance.  Love that. (Did you know that you can burn rosemary like incense for cleansing your home of cooking smells?)

According to jollyfestive.com,  different textures for your festive décor and your tree are very much on trend this year.

Glass baubles, of course, and velvet ribbons, feathered tassles, big luxurious faux florals. More is more with a distinctive maximalist feel. Like a bold statement of celebration and happiness in defiance of all the doom and gloom!

I still have decorations from when my kids were kids.  And one very precious bauble from my own childhood!  (It’s ok to be a bit ruthless when that precious nursery school loo roll angel is unrecognisable)

Don’t chuck out your wreath after the festivities. Repurpose it for spring, Valentines and Easter. Faux wreaths can be stored and reused year after year.

Heirloom statement pieces can be tweaked throughout the year to give a nod to the season.

Housebeautiful.com says ‘Christmas Cottage is an emotive, wholesome and humble celebration of our homes, with rural escapism at its heart.  Focusing on ‘remembering the past, embracing the present and anticipating the future’

So, perfectly matched design doesn’t matter so much.  Make your tree full of memories and stories, with treasured decorations from across the decades or upcycled for a new lease of life.

Have a wander round antique shops and artisan homeware shops to find vintage indented glass baubles and retro multi-coloured fairy lights.

  • Candy cane stripes? (mmm – not this year for me);
  • Critters and mushrooms? (possibly)
  • Barbie World pink? (not for me)
  • Fluffy stars? (wrong on so many levels)
  • Ultra luxe with gold, gold and more gold? (Toned down with deep reds or greens? – yes)

I remember reading, years ago, an article about moving house – the one sentence that stays with me is ‘furnish your home with your own traditions.’
