Are you setting the trend? This blog will show you how choosing the less ordinary for your wedding will go beyond the one-size-fits-all model.
Have you noticed how venues use the same styling for every wedding, just different colours? Now, I accept that there is a limit on what you can do with a row of chairs. But those white covers and the coloured chiffon bows? White wooden spindle chairs?Admittedly, when a venue is popular with couples, the practical choice makes for a quick turnaround. I get that. But ….
And then there’s the flowers and floral décor. Pinterest will show you the same sort of bouquets, using the same sort of flowers. Even dried arrangements have a same-ness about them. The table centres are all similar: pedestals with massed flowers in top, bud vases, broken arches, moon gates. Sound familiar? And, honestly, if a bride only sees those images, that’s what she will share with her florist.
Is it time to be setting the trend and choosing the less ordinary for your wedding?
Let’s start with you
Everyone loves a story, right? And everyone has a story to tell ….
Think about your travels. Have you lived abroad? Where in the world would be your first choice for your dream home? Do you love spending your holidays in Spain? Are you a sci-fi fan? What’s your favourite book?
Where did you play as a child? What flowers do you remember from your mother’s garden? What were your gran’s favourite flowers? (My grandkids always comment on how my garden is full of lavender and roses)
And then there’s your own unique personality.
Are you a live wire? A bit of a rebel? Or quiet, more likely to hug a tree than be in the limelight?
So here are some ideas ….
Think of the place and times where you as a couple have been happiest. You can plan your wedding to celebrate those wonderful moments. Got engaged by a lake? Choose a lake side venue. Love sailing together? Or walking the dog on the beach when on holiday? What about a beach themed wedding, with fish and chips and beer? Sea shells on the tables….
Your flowers should first reflect the sort of person you are. We all have different shades of personality and this can be shown in the flowers you choose. Nature doesn’t limit herself, so why should you?
The most popular flowers for bridal florals are roses, peonies, hydrangeas, tulips, orchids, anemones, lilac, ranunculus, lily of the valley, dahlias, calla lilies and sweet peas. All lovely.
And the arrangements are all pretty much the same in style.
Now don’t get me wrong. If that’s what you are dreaming about, that’s exactly what you should you have. It’s your day.
And yet….
What about a bouquet of wild meadow flowers? Or just lush greenery? Like ferns, ivy, eucalyptus, ficus, with interesting lichen covered branches?
And what about your floral décor?
A florist I know created a ‘garden of delights’ for a friend’s wedding. To celebrate a much loved, and missed, grandparent’s love of gardening. Logs, moss, miniature garden tools, fresh herbs, little potted plants…. magical
Some couples opt for a favourite theme, like Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, Game of Thrones, Bridgerton …
But if this isn’t your thing, you can still buck the on-size-fits-all trend. Thinking outside the box a bit.
Bring the outside in. Potted trees, lush piles of fresh potted ferns, herbs and flowering plants. Like the idea of an arch? What about a couple of living trees in pots, perhaps with ivy or wisteria trailing between them at the top?
Think about different flowers – not just roses and pampas grass. Alstroemeira colours are fabulous, Chinese lanterns have a wonderful delicate drape-iness (is that even a word?), nigella – fresh or dried, bunny tail grasses. Succulents on the tables …
Have a look at Japanese and Chinese flower styles – they are delicate, almost ethereal, and exquisite. They create utterly beautiful effects without overstuffing with flowers.
Buy British flowers
British grown flowers are better for the environment. They don’t have to be treated with chemicals to keep them fresh while being flown around the world. And yes, you may be a bit limited according to the season (you won’t get tulips in August) but this is just another chance to choose the less ordinary!
So, what will you choose for your wedding? I’d love to know!
And if you want to use silk flowers for your bridal flowers – simply complete the contact form and we can get together for an informal natter over a cuppa. No hard sell – just chatting over ideas and what your dream flowers are. And if that means a zoom call …. no problem! We can share a virtual cuppa! (I promise not to munch on a biscuit unless you’ve got one too)
