I first met Ellie at a wedding fair in June 2025. She was looking for very specific flowers that were important to her and her partner, some of which were not in season on her chosen date. Silk flowers were the answer for her, and this is how our journey together, worked out.

The couple had decided to have a micro wedding with no more than 20 people who were important to them. Ellie was a dream to work with as she was very clear about what she wanted. A simple round bouquet, a hair comb for her, buttonholes for the groom, their little boy, and other significant chaps in their bridal party. No bridesmaids. She loved bright colours and was drawn to jewel colours: deep pinks, bright blues, orange, and purple. She also wanted a small table arrangement for the ceremony table, something that could be moved to a cake table or the buffet table.

The vibe was simple, beautiful and focussed on the couple

This is a detailed reflection of our discussions, with illustrations of the colours and suggested flowers in line with the couple’s vision.

Step 3 The booking

The wedding was booked for May 2026 so you can imagine my surprise when one late October morning, Ellie messaged me to say that everything had changed. Problems with their venue meant they had to rethink all their plans. There was a new date -10th December. Could I still do their flowers? Short answer: yes of course! I had six weeks to get orders in and get creating. Communication throughout the process is crucial, so I made sure that we were in regular contact with progress photos of flowers ordered and arrangements made.

Cost? Under £400

That WOW moment can’t be matched. Outcome – a very happy couple who felt listened to throughout the process.

And then Ellie shared with me the magical photos of the ceremony itself. It was such a privilege and delight to work with this couple.

Time taken from day one: 6 months. Could it be done quicker? Yes. It’s always worth discussing time scales and I will always be open and upfront with what is possible.

Yes. I believe that the large luxury end of the wedding industry can sometimes lose focus: the wedding couple can be more like spectators in their own wedding event instead of being at the centre. Small weddings focus on the couple, and as the florist I love the personal details and the close cooperation with my clients.

I make a point of ensuring that most, if not all, of the arrangements I make can be reused or repurposed after the wedding. This isn’t really practical for a big wedding, but ideal for small weddings. Ellie’s flowers are now part of their décor, bringing them pleasure every day.

The average cost of weddings this year is around £22000 in the UK. And likely to rise as economic pressures come to bear on all suppliers in the industry. Small weddings are coming up as between £5000 and £15000. Couples are taking a pragmatic and thoughtful approach to what they want for their big day.  One couple I had discussions with recently were focussed on buying a house. Naturally, that had a significant impact on how much they were prepared to spend on their wedding. A good example of why small weddings work so well in the current climate – beautiful, intimate, memorable but not financially crippling nor competing with other financial priorities.
