The ancient Chinese people believed that arranging things to create positive chi (life force) will ensure good health, improve relationships, and bring luck and prosperity.

Now, I’ve learnt that there are five important elements of feng shui: wood (growth & creativity), metal (logic & intelligence), earth (stability & balance), water (wisdom & serenity), and fire (passion & energy)

And using these these elements in your home is actually much simpler than you might think. (Purists might disagree with me, but we have to start somewhere!)

  • Wood – bit of a no-brainer here with wooden furniture.
  • MetalModern chrome picture frames look classy or how about a modern metallic-effect vase?
  • Earth Decorate rooms with a houseplant. They improve the energy, increase health and naturally purify the air.  Ah but – do they die on you?  (Me too!) Perhaps you can consider plants like succulents that are attractive but need very little care.  (Faux plants and flowers with lots of uplifting greens work for me – getting that pop of joy every day when you see them is all positive energy, right? Yep!)  Decorative stones work too for the earth element. Maybe a glass bowl of pretty stones, or a little stone statue that you love that will fit nicely on a shelf or table – or even act as a door stop! Most garden centres have small bags of decorative stones and they can look really nice in a pretty bowl or dish.
  • Waterany reflective surface, like a mirror.  An aquarium is great if you’re a big fan of tiny fish and don’t mind the cost and maintenance.  Not my thing.  But I do like a beautiful mirror. A few mirror tiles, or decorative mirrors of any kind, add light and the impression of space to any room.  Vintage or modern frames are both available (charity shops can be a real gold mine) – which will suit your natural style?
  • Firecandles!  Who doesn’t like a beautifully scented candle.  Or that soft glow from candles on a cold night. Scents have powerful effects, too, for harmony and energy. Have a look at my blog Three Steps to Scented Harmony, for some ideas.

Modern built homes are often compact, with little room for fancy extras that may just make everything feel cluttered. I believe that family homes evolve and grow as the family does.  So, it’s worth taking your time to add those little unique touches that enhance the light, energy and harmony. They should really chime with you, your character and your own unique style.
