Looking for ways to give your home a spruce up?  These four easy hacks will help you get your home summer ready.

#1 Colours for happiness

It’s not necessary to get out the paint and rollers – unless everything is looking a bit tired.  Simply add splashes of colour and texture, by switching up your accessories.

The best colours to choose?  This will depend on you and your personality. Warmer tones such as sunshine yellows and burnt oranges reflect the weather and add energy to a room’s ambience.  With summer temperatures getting higher and higher, maybe you’re thinking more about a cooler look.  Try mixing positive sunny yellow with greys, and muted pale blues.  Soft greens can also add to that cool and calm vibe.

#2 Declutter and refresh your accessories

Of course, you’ll be swapping thick blankets and duvets for summer weight.  Why not splash out with fresh duvet covers and pillow cases in cool colours like soft greens, blues and greys.  Perhaps pretty light florals in that country cottage core trend that is so popular.  Light throws with fresh colours or even blended colours, such as merging from cream to blue, or green or yellow. I’ve seen some beautiful throws (the sort that are so soft you want to stroke and cuddle them).  Perfect for chillier evenings as we move from late spring to summer.

Add mirrors to reflect light and brighten up a room.  Various department stores and outlets have very wide ranges, from the funky to the more traditional styles.  Why not step outside your comfort zone and try something unusual for the season?

Switch your curtains from heavier winter curtains for light filtering curtains or billowy voiles.  If your usual curtains are too heavy and costly to replace easily, try adding voiles that can be pulled over the window while the heavier curtains act as a frame at each edge. The cosy, darker nesting of winter can be replaced by a lighter airy vibe that keeps out the heat without sacrificing air movement and light.

Update your cushion covers (no need to buy new cushions). Add yellows and greens, alongside pastel blues and creams with interesting textures. Different layers of colour and textiles can bring easy cheer and energy to the summer months. Think satin, leather and suede, embroidery, linen, for starters.

#3 Cool and calm indoor plants

Anything green can add to that cool, calm ambience.  And according to housebeautiful.com, if you place a Peace Lily in a bathroom or shower room, it will absorb excess moisture. Mould spores thrive in the warm moist weather, and a Peace Lily will help prevent pesky mould and mildew growth.

Do indoor plants die on you? I hear you!  Indoor temperatures can be difficult to regulate if you don’t have aircon.  So why not use faux plants and silk flowers?  There is a very wide variety of flowers that are amazingly realistic. And if you opt for the best quality (and close your eyes to the price tag which can be high sometimes), you can have arrangements that add to your cheery and bright summer décor year after year.

#4 Have fun with summer art

How about pictures of nature? Flowers, birds, landscapes, seascapes. Everything you love with pops of colour or simply soft greens and greys.  Depending on the room and the atmosphere you want to create.  Like the idea of the mermaid core trend (inspired by the latest film)?  Very easy to achieve with creams, blues, and turquoise, shells, and basketry that incorporates greys and sandy shades.  Fill a vintage bottle with pretty shells.  Or recycle your mayo jars, fill with white sand and then add interesting twigs that you can paint white to resemble drift wood (handy if you’re not close to the sea or local authorities get twitchy about folk taking things from the beach.)
