Are you setting the trend? This blog will show you how choosing the less ordinary wedding flowers for your wedding will go beyond the one-size-fits-all model.
Have you noticed how venues use the same styling for every wedding, just different colours? Now, I accept that there is a limit on what you can do with a row of chairs. But those white covers and the coloured chiffon bows? White wooden spindle chairs? Admittedly, when a venue is popular with couples, the practical choice makes for a quick turnaround. I get that. But ….
And then there’s the flowers and floral décor. Pinterest will show you the same sort of bouquets, using the same sort of flowers. Even dried arrangements have a same-ness about them. The table centres are all similar: pedestals with massed flowers in top, bud vases, broken or full arches loaded with flowers, moon gates. Sound familiar? And, honestly, if a bride only sees those images, that’s what she will share with her florist.
Is it time to be setting the trend and choosing the less ordinary for your wedding?
Let’s start with you
Everyone loves a story, right? And everyone has a story to tell ….Where did you play as a child? What flowers do you remember from your mother’s garden? What were your gran’s favourite flowers? (My grandkids always comment on how my garden is full of lavender and roses)
And then there’s your own unique personality. Are you a live wire? A bit of a rebel? Or quiet, more likely to hug a tree than be in the limelight?
So here are some ideas ….
Your flowers should first reflect the sort of person you are. We all have different shades of personality and this can be shown in the flowers you choose. Trust your instincts – if you like the idea of something bright, but you instinctively know that neon green and pinks will look awful, go with your gut!
The most popular flowers for bridal florals are roses, peonies, hydrangeas, tulips, orchids, anemones, lilac, ranunculus, lily of the valley, dahlias, calla lilies and sweet peas. All lovely. And the arrangements are all pretty much the same in style. Soft, round bouquets. Or cascade bouquets of flowers and foliage.
Now don’t get me wrong. If that’s what you are dreaming about, that’s exactly what you should you have. It’s your day. And yet ….
What about a bouquet of wild meadow flowers? Or just lush greenery? Like ferns, ivy, eucalyptus, ficus, with interesting lichen covered branches?

And what about your floral décor?
Do you have to have specific colours? No. Pretty much anything goes. Detailed discussions with your florist and event stylist (if you have one) will help you bring your vision to reality. It comes down to your personal style.
Do you have to have fresh flowers? No. Dried arrangements, silk flowers or a mix of both, are popular. For couples that have hayfever or allergies, silk flowers can be a very practical alternative to fresh flowers.
Do you have to have a theme? No – it’s whatever works for you both. Some couples opt for a favourite theme, like Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, Game of Thrones, Bridgerton … But if this isn’t your thing, you can still buck the one-size-fits-all trend. Thinking outside the box a bit. And giving a nod to sustainability at the same time.
Such as – bringing the outside in. I’m a fan of repurposing and reusing flowers. So imagine potted trees, lush piles of fresh potted ferns, herbs and flowering plants. Your table décor could be potted succulents, pansies or bright primulas that can be taken home by your guests.
Think about different flowers – not just roses and pampas grass (terrible for allergy sufferers!). Alstroemeira colours are fabulous, Chinese lanterns have a wonderful delicate drape-iness (is that even a word?), nigella – fresh or dried, bunny tail grasses
Buy British grown flowers. British grown flowers are better for the environment. They don’t have to be treated with chemicals to keep them fresh while being flown around the world. And yes, you may be a bit limited according to the season (you won’t get tulips in August) but this is just another chance to choose the less ordinary
