Getting your home ready for autumn and chilly days doesn’t have to be expensive!  These autumn home style budget beaters can help to transform your rooms and bring warmth and pleasure every day.
#1 Bring the outside in.

When you’re out rambling in the country side (walking the dog or just enjoying it!), look out for stuff you can forage – without upsetting farmers or landowners, or damaging plants.  Interestingly shaped branches that have fallen and may be covered with lichen, for example.

Teasels are plentiful at this time of year, and can be sprayed (gold or silver maybe) or left to bleach on their own.  Watch out if you gather a few in the wild – their stems are prickly and can stab you! Pop a couple of stems in a vase and there you are.

Ivy –  I have masses growing in my garden in a living fence with my neighbour.  Their flowers are really pretty, like clouds of pale green.  And ivy lasts a really long time inside, and even longer outside in a wreath.  Spread it across your mantel.  Tie a bunch together and stuff it into a tall vase to drape elegantly in a dim corner.  And when the flowers are gone, the seed heads look stunning in a green wreath for your front door.  I made one last year and it lasted until February when I regretfully took it down to make room for a spring one.

Pinecones – fill a bag! Spread your cones across your mantel (in amongst the ivy?) or fill a tray or shallow basket to dress up your dining room or coffee table.

#2  Switch  your accessories

A wise friend of mine once said ‘Sue, you don’t need to redecorate or get out the credit card – simply change your accessories to change the ambience of any room.’  And that’s what I do! (because I always pay attention to wise advice!)

Soft throws, blankets and cushions in colours to match or contrast with your room colours need only be bought once!  Practical doesn’t mean boring!  Both Ikea and Dunelm have ranges to suit most budgets.  Cushion covers can be changed according to the season and the effects you want to create.

#3 Faux foliage and wreaths

Now, I can see why you might say that buying faux foliage and wreaths is an indulgence too far.  The best quality pieces are not cheap.  BUT.  (There’s always a ‘but’…)  Like your cosy throws and cushions, a faux wreath need only be bought once – and will last for several years.  You add a pop of cheer and colour to your porch or hallway… and when the season is over, you simply pack it up and put it away until next year. A bit like Christmas decorations (I still have decorations from when I was a child.  Haven’t the heart to throw them out!)
